Welcome

Refugee Strong is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering refugee communities through education and support. Founded by Omar Mohamed, a former Somali refugee, the organization focuses on providing students in refugee camps with essential school supplies, scholarships, and menstrual health kits to ensure consistent school attendance—especially for girls.

Key initiatives include:

  • Educational Support: Distributing school supplies and funding scholarships to help students pursue their academic goals.

  • Health & Hygiene: Providing menstruation kits to reduce school absenteeism among girls.

  • Community Empowerment: Building libraries and educational spaces, such as their third library in the Dadaab refugee camp, to foster learning and community development.

Refugee Strong operates with the belief that education is the most powerful tool for creating a brighter future for displaced youth. The organization is based in Pennsylvania but works globally to uplift refugee voices and opportunities.

In the heart of Kenya’s Dadaab Refugee Camp, the annual soccer tournament sponsored by Refugee Strong has become a powerful symbol of hope, resilience, and unity. Drawing teams from across the camp’s sprawling settlements—Dagahaley, Ifo, and Hagadera—the tournament transforms dusty pitches into arenas of joy and fierce competition. For many young refugees, soccer is more than a game; it’s a lifeline that offers a break from the hardships of displacement and a chance to dream beyond the camp’s borders. Refugee Strong, a nonprofit founded by former refugee Omar Mohamed, supports this initiative as part of its broader mission to empower displaced youth through education and community engagement. The tournament not only fosters physical and mental well-being but also strengthens social bonds and inspires leadership among the camp’s youth. Amid limited resources, players often share jerseys and play barefoot, yet the spirit of the game shines through—proving that even in the most challenging circumstances, sport can be a powerful force for healing and hope.
